The History of Animal Rubber Bands

Shaped Rubber Band

If you haven't seen them yet, you will. Animal rubber bands are the hottest, latest pop craze in youth culture. While the product actually first appeared in 2002 from a different company, the phenomenon has created a manufacturer and retailer rush provide for the very high demand as quickly as possible. For now, one of the world's most lucrative product is an office supply!

The fad formally began five years ago in 2005, when the products notoriety grew on the Eastern coast of the United States and began to spread westward, captivating the attention and interest of school children, teens of all ages and even young college adults. While the fad is not restricted to youth culture (these bands have been increasing in popularity among working professionals and offices across America as well) the demographic driving the craze is largely people aged under 22 years old.

What is it that makes a simple animal shaped office supply so irresistible?

One could point to the wide variety of colors available, a range that continues to grow with the popularity of the products themselves. Likely, it is the novelty of the animal shapes themselves, the selection of which is also expanding rapidly and as of this writing includes dinosaurs, crustaceans and other sea creatures, common zoo animals, ordinary every day house hold pets, birds, reptiles and even bugs.

Even so, the most prominent factor of the bands' success seems to be the very forgiving elastic limit of the band's material--which, unlike the name suggests, is not exactly rubber.

The bands sold during the early years of the new millennium were not very spectacular; they were manufactured from the same material as other ordinary office rubber bands and were not particularly more durable than their traditional counterparts. The animal bands of today, however, just as those that hit stores in 2005, are made out of a crucial component for their famed durability: silicone.

The silicone in these bands are what permits the product to stretch out farther and stay that way for longer periods of time without compromising the overall shape of the band. It also makes it more durable, resilient and prone to a longer use life.

In fact, part of the newer bands' appeal is the fun of stretching them out and watching them pull back into their perfect prior shape, which they can maintain even after multiple periods of use. While they may look childish, they can actually handle the jobs of ordinary bands very well, in some cases, better than the more conventional variety.

Many in the children's products industry have likened the animal band craze to the very similar beanie baby fad of the nineties, which spread to a world wide phenomenon in just a few short months.

Due to this explosion of popularity, competition between manufacturers has been fierce and unrelenting, pushing the quality of similar copy cat products to their best in the process, and the consumers don't really seem to distinguish between brands. This fact is wonderful for competing retailers, whose concerns lie with keeping their shelves stocked with a product known to sell out hours after a new shipment has arrived.

The powerlessness of the brand in this instance is peculiar, but has its ties to the history of the bands the current major vendor is not the one who first created the product; and the nature of the product: simple to recreate. So many competing companies have surfaced in such a short time that the public has yet to find appreciable differences in quality or variety.

For many industry insiders, the predicted market saturation of these bands seems inevitable in this economy. For consumers, that means post fad discounts--not a bad ending to this products notoriety, considering they are just as useful whether they're popular or not.

Animal Bracelets - What, Who, Where

What Are Animal Bracelets?

Over the past couple of years animal bracelets have become hugely popular with kids everywhere. They are fun to wear, fun to trade, and fun to collect. If you don't know what animal bracelets are they are silicone rubber bands made in the shape of objects and people. The silicone rubber band looks and acts much like a traditional rubber band, but it is able to retain its original shape for longer periods of time. The designs range from dinosaurs to dollar signs and the list keeps growing. They come in many different colors and when you wear a bunch on your wrist they look like a gob of rainbow colored pasta. The cost per pack is around five dollars making them popular with parents too. You typically get six different designs per pack. Each pack contains two or four bands of each design for a total of 12 to 24 bracelets per pack.

Who Makes Animal Bracelets?

The animal bracelets craze really took off in the Fall of 2009 and it has been spreading like wildfire ever since. Their success has inspired many new manufacturers to begin producing these cute and collectible bracelets all around the world. There are so many companies making animal bracelets now it's getting hard to keep track of all of the new brands. Some of the more popular brands are Silly Bandz, Zany Bandz, and Crazy Bands, but there are many start-ups coming on fast. As with everything else that is mass produced animal bracelets are often made in China and developing nations where the labor is cheap. Don't worry though, as far as I can tell the quality between different makers is pretty much the same. The larger companies typically produce generic shapes for the masses leaving specialty segments for smaller companies. One of these segments is college football. Currently some of the smaller manufacturers are producing rubber bands in college football colors. I predict that very soon most college football teams will have custom rubber bands in the shape of their mascots and team colors. The professional sports market is another niche that will probably have custom rubber bands very soon. So keep looking.

Where To Find Animal Bracelets

If you are an avid collector, like I am, you are probably always on the hunt for new designs. Half of the fun collecting animal bracelets is finding new packs. At first they were only sold in toy stores and specialty shops. Now you can find them in retailers everywhere, but each store typically only carries one or two brands. Wal-Mart and Target have not started selling them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to find them on their shelves soon. To find new styles you have to visit several stores in your neighborhood or search the web. I do both, but the internet is the preferred method. Most of the manufacturers have their own websites where they sell individual packs, but searching the internet can be time consuming and unless you are really dedicated you may miss some.

Animal Rubber Band security concerns?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

animal rubber bands are very popular these days. Kids take these colorful ribbons formed from Miami to Maine, but I'm pretty sure? The short answer is no, but that is quite safe these days? Like every other toy on the shelf will always be security problems if you can play with young children small objects. The purpose of this article is to give each animal bracelets buy a heads-up on safety. I'm not a security expert, but Iwas faced with the common sense of two good parents and I try to do the same for my two boys. My opinion may be worth what it costs, but I want to share my thoughts on this topic. My son and I picked up the police band for several months. I saw him and his friends play with them without any major security problems so far, but the other day when I have some problem that could pose a problem thought. He did not discuss anything about the things I do, and I hopehe never does.

The first safety concern I have is that children with animal bracelets in her mouth. Do not know about you, but I remember when I was a kid I had two tapes of chewing gum or a time. I do not know why I did it. Maybe I was bored, maybe I should be chewing gum, but for some reason I did. As with any small object, there is a real risk of suffocation when children put these things in your mouth. Some of the packages I boughtWarning choking hazard to children under three are listed on the label, but most do not. To see your children while wearing them and remind them often that no other food in your mouth. Also Watch their little brothers and sisters. My youngest is two, so I'm always looking for bands stray animal on the floor or your fingertips, small.

The second security problem, I will speak, the silicone bands are thus able to shootacross the room, just like normal elastics. Growing up my friends and I had some bad wars rather elastic. We stretch class to shoot each other. E 'was fun, until someone took one for the face. The wars usually ended pretty quickly after that. Silicone rubber used to make the bands of the animals is the same as elastic as rubber bands normal, then let your child shoot. We have a strict rule in ourHouse. If you lose shoot em EM. It just takes one shot to ruin any fun.
