Can You Build Muscle Using Resistance Bands?

Recently I was asked if resistance bands could be used to build strength and muscle size similarly to dumbbells. Here is what was asked...

"Hi Yuri, I've watched all of your YouTube videos on different types of exercises.

I would like to ask you if it's possible to build muscle using a resistance band (just like you can with weights)?

I'm a frequent traveler who wants to sculpt my body but i can only travel with the resistance bands. Any suggestions of how to get ripped using such exercise bands or is it possible? I hope you can tell me as you are a pro in this. Million thanks, Elvis."

Well Elvis, the answer to your question is yes!

I recommend using resistance bands for several reasons.

First, using resistance bands is a great way to develop strength. A growing body of research is showing that "accommodating resistance", a phenomenon whereby the band's tension becomes more challenging at your muscles' strongest length (or angle), is a tremendous way of developing muscular strength.

For instance, performing a biceps curl with a resistance band is far more challenging than using dumbbells. This is due to the fact that as you raise the band it becomes more taut, creating more tension and work in the biceps muscle.

In general, as you lengthen the band it creates more resistance. So it's almost like starting the movement with 10 lbs dumbbell and finishing it with a 30 lbs dumbbell, as an example. The constant pull of the band creates an ever-growing amount of tension making any muscular movement challenging throughout.

Second, as the resistance band is stretched it stores a tremendous amount of "recoil" or kinetic energy, much like a outstretched spring. The natural tendency then would be for the band to "snap" back to original length, much like a rubber band that has been stretched. This provides an incredible eccentric or "negative" load on the working muscles that can produce amazing gains in strength.

So the combination of increasing tension and intrinsic eccentric properties make the resistance band an amazing workout tool for developing muscular strength and size.

However, it is important to progressively use tauter bands as you become stronger. Just like using a 10 lbs dumbbell forever will force you to plateau and realize no further strength gain, so too will a band of similar tension. As you get stronger move onto a tougher more resistant band. Progression and overload are 2 important aspects of any training program and need to be implemented for maximum gains in strength and muscular growth.

Here is a resistance band workout that is great for doing at home, while you travel, or even in the gym:

*For each exercise, complete as many reps as you can in 30 seconds.

1. Squat Presses

2. Resisted Step-ups with Biceps Curls

3. Lateral Lunge with Diagonal Chop

3. Resisted Crunches (on stability ball)

4. Reverse Lunge with Back Row

5. Standing Alternating Chest Press

6. Squat Sit with 1-Arm Back Row

The History of Animal Rubber Bands

If you haven't seen them yet, you will. Animal rubber bands are the hottest, latest pop craze in youth culture. While the product actually first appeared in 2002 from a different company, the phenomenon has created a manufacturer and retailer rush provide for the very high demand as quickly as possible. For now, one of the world's most lucrative product is an office supply!

The fad formally began five years ago in 2005, when the products notoriety grew on the Eastern coast of the United States and began to spread westward, captivating the attention and interest of school children, teens of all ages and even young college adults. While the fad is not restricted to youth culture (these bands have been increasing in popularity among working professionals and offices across America as well) the demographic driving the craze is largely people aged under 22 years old.

What is it that makes a simple animal shaped office supply so irresistible?

One could point to the wide variety of colors available, a range that continues to grow with the popularity of the products themselves. Likely, it is the novelty of the animal shapes themselves, the selection of which is also expanding rapidly and as of this writing includes dinosaurs, crustaceans and other sea creatures, common zoo animals, ordinary every day house hold pets, birds, reptiles and even bugs.

Even so, the most prominent factor of the bands' success seems to be the very forgiving elastic limit of the band's material--which, unlike the name suggests, is not exactly rubber.

The bands sold during the early years of the new millennium were not very spectacular; they were manufactured from the same material as other ordinary office rubber bands and were not particularly more durable than their traditional counterparts. The animal bands of today, however, just as those that hit stores in 2005, are made out of a crucial component for their famed durability: silicone.

The silicone in these bands are what permits the product to stretch out farther and stay that way for longer periods of time without compromising the overall shape of the band. It also makes it more durable, resilient and prone to a longer use life.

In fact, part of the newer bands' appeal is the fun of stretching them out and watching them pull back into their perfect prior shape, which they can maintain even after multiple periods of use. While they may look childish, they can actually handle the jobs of ordinary bands very well, in some cases, better than the more conventional variety.

Many in the children's products industry have likened the animal band craze to the very similar beanie baby fad of the nineties, which spread to a world wide phenomenon in just a few short months.

Due to this explosion of popularity, competition between manufacturers has been fierce and unrelenting, pushing the quality of similar copy cat products to their best in the process, and the consumers don't really seem to distinguish between brands. This fact is wonderful for competing retailers, whose concerns lie with keeping their shelves stocked with a product known to sell out hours after a new shipment has arrived.

The powerlessness of the brand in this instance is peculiar, but has its ties to the history of the bands the current major vendor is not the one who first created the product; and the nature of the product: simple to recreate. So many competing companies have surfaced in such a short time that the public has yet to find appreciable differences in quality or variety.

For many industry insiders, the predicted market saturation of these bands seems inevitable in this economy. For consumers, that means post fad discounts--not a bad ending to this products notoriety, considering they are just as useful whether they're popular or not.

Pool Ladder

Getting in and out of the pool is made a lot easier by pool ladders or pool steps. A pool ladder is a specialized type of device used to access the pool or other similar areas. Just like pool lights, there are many types of this kind of attachments. They are most often made of plastic horizontal steps and vertical metal poles. It has numerous uses, but most are generally made for outfitting either above ground pools or in-ground pools.

The main purpose of pool ladders is to provide easier access for people who want to use the pool. It also offers added safety because it provides more opportunity for those trying to get out of the pool, or for getting into the pool safely. If there are no ladders, some users might try unsafe methods of entering the pool, which can result to accidents and serious injuries. These attachments are also used on boats. They provide away for individuals to access different parts of the boat. They can also be found on large aquariums, cruise ships, and other environments.

Ideal Pool Ladder

The ideal above ground pool attachment should have 2-4 steps. Most above ground pools are 4-6 feet in depth, although they can be a bit difficult for kids to enter. Kids will have an easier time getting in and out of the pool the more ladder steps you have. However, if you have a ladder that has a deck, you won't need as many steps. Cleaning is easy with the Kreepy Krauly or other devices.

Above Ground Pool Ladders

Most above ground attachments have separate functions and it usually requires two separate ladders, one which helps ascend the side of the pool and the other to enter or exit the water. The first kind is usually attached to a basic freestanding deck. The ladder allows a person to enter the deck and the other ladder descends into the pool for safe entry. This type of ladder requires assembly and it can be done quite easily but to ensure the safety of everyone it is better to have it professionally installed.

Most above ground attachments are made of various metals and a few have vinyl coatings but the colors are very limited. There are usually two choices, chrome and white. Do not paint the ladder because that might compromise the safety of people. Painting the ladder makes it very slippery. It is better to be safe than be artistic. You can also put anti skid pads on the ladder steps. These are usually white but they may come in different colors. The pads provide a surface that isn't slippery and it gives your feet something to grip.

How to Choose the Right Pool Ladder

These ladders are useful, durable and a very important addition to swimming pools. There are above ground pool ladders and other types. They can be made from concrete or fiberglass, shallow or deep. This is a guide that will help you in choosing the right pool ladder.

· Check your pool. In order to get the right ladder, you must check your pool. Some ladders need to be mounted while some needs to be installed during the time the pool is constructed. Some can be retrofitted. There are pre-molded swimming pools may have grooves where a ladder can be fitted. This makes installation easier. It is particularly essential to check the bottom of the pool. There might be a need to drill holes in the bottom of the pool and the decking for firm installation.
· Choose the correct ladder style. As mentioned earlier there are many types of pool ladders above ground. The most common type of pool ladder is the classic style ladder. This is the kind you will most likely find in swimming pools today. These are made from resilient steel with rubber steps for added grip. Ladders come with different number of steps, depending on the depth of the water. Different models can be mounted in different ways. You can even find models that emulate staircase-style steps for the added visual appeal. Pool ladders like this are usually made from molded resin.
· Positioning of the pool ladder. There are numerous types of handrails to choose from. The most common is the looped, triangular grab rails that provide a variety of places to grip. U-shaped handrails are suitable for young swimmers. Remember that ladders are meant to provide safety and protection to swimmers, young and old alike, so do not settle for cheap models. Shoddy installations and cheap models may save you money but you'll put yourself and your family at risk. Ladders can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to $600. Always check for sturdiness when buying a ladder. The kind of ladder may also affect the total cost of in-ground pool prices because they are sometimes included in the kit.
